Only State Police Bill transmitted to states, National Assembly clarifies

The National Assembly has made clear that a single Constitution Alteration Bill has been forwarded to the 36 State Houses of Assembly. This was announced by CNA Kamoru Ogunlana in a statement on Tuesday. The bill in question is the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, Sixth Alteration, Bill, 2026, titled: "A Bill for an Act to Alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to Provide for the Establishment of State Police Services; and for Related Matters."

Ogunlana emphasized that this is the only bill that has been transmitted so far, and cautioned against misconceptions that all alteration bills have been sent to the states. The priority was given to the State Police Bill due to public demand and the urgent need to address security issues. This move aims to provide a legal framework for policing challenges.

Other alteration bills will be transmitted once they have been passed in the same form by both chambers of the National Assembly, in accordance with the constitutional amendment process. The National Assembly has urged the public and media to rely on official communications for accurate information regarding the constitution review exercise.
