New look Michigan State women's basketball finding its way with young group

East Lansing, Michigan — A year ago, Sara Sambolić was still trying to find her place within the Michigan State women’s basketball program. Today, the senior guard from Slovenia stands among just six returning Spartans as the team undergoes a transformation. On Tuesday, September 22, as practice commenced, Sambolić expressed her newfound comfort level, acknowledging her growing trust in both the coaching staff and her teammates. She emphasized her commitment to being a good teammate and supporting her fellow Spartans.

Sambolić's experience is in stark contrast to the rest of the squad, which is marked by a significant turnover. The Spartans are comprised of four freshmen and five transfers, resulting in a roster that is among the youngest she has encountered during her tenure at MSU. Fourth-year head coach, Robyn Fralick, noted the team's youth, stating, "We graduated a lot. This is probably the youngest team I've had since I've been here."

Among the newcomers, Howell graduate Lilly Williams, a McDonald's All-American and the state's Miss Basketball winner in March, stands out. The 6-foot-5 center, who recently overcame eye surgery, is now fully engaged in Spartan practices. Fralick expressed excitement about Williams' potential, praising her unique combination of size, athleticism, and scoring ability.

Coach Fralick emphasized that the team is still figuring out how to play together. While some players like Sambolić have found their footing, the Spartans are in the process of learning to work as a cohesive unit. The coach expressed optimism about the team's growth potential, stating that they have interesting pieces that can complement each other as they continue to develop.
