Malaysia taps Gulf air links to grow Middle East tourism

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22 - Malaysia is intensifying air connectivity and tourism collaboration with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the broader Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region to augment tourist arrivals from the Middle East. This initiative was emphasized during an official trip by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture deputy secretary-general (Tourism), Chua Choon Hwa, to Dubai between Sept 13 and 17.

During the visit, Chua engaged with various airlines, travel agencies, and tourism industry stakeholders. Key agreements included Memorandums of Understanding between Tourism Malaysia and Emirates, as well as Qatar Airways, to enhance tourism promotion and joint marketing. Tourism Malaysia’s director-general, Mohd Amirul Rizal Abdul Rahim, also participated in discussions with representatives from other airlines, travel agencies, and tourism players.

Chua highlighted the importance of air connectivity, stating that strengthened ties with leading airlines and travel industry partners would make Malaysia more accessible to travelers from the UAE, GCC, and the wider Middle Eastern market. Dubai and Abu Dhabi, as major international flight hubs, offer Malaysia opportunities to reach markets in Africa and Europe.

Malaysia has already welcomed 30,257 visitors from the GCC region from January to June, indicating its potential for family holidays, luxury travel, Muslim-friendly tourism, shopping, wellness, gastronomy, nature, and experiential travel. These efforts align with the Visit Malaysia 2026-2027 campaign, aiming to boost international visitor arrivals, including from the UAE, GCC, and the broader Middle Eastern markets.

Tourism Malaysia will continue to capitalize on partnerships and collaborative initiatives with industry alliances to drive consistent growth from the UAE and GCC region.
