Maharashtra drought deepens, crisis mounts

Maharashtra is grappling with an intensifying drought crisis, raising apprehensions about agricultural output. As a top or second largest producer of sugarcane, soybean and cotton, the state is also a significant fruit and vegetable producer. Following a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the issuance of a notification identifying drought-stricken regions and relief measures.

Agriculture Minister Dattatray Bharane confirmed a substantial decline in cotton and soybean production, while the agriculture department has launched an early crop assessment to determine compensation for farmers who are uprooting withered crops. The situation may also impact milk and poultry production and prices, with some areas already experiencing fodder shortages.

Fadnavis noted large-scale crop wilting, particularly in soybean, cotton, maize, jowar, and paddy. The Soyabean Processors Association of India reported that 8.84% of the country's soybean crop faced complete destruction, highlighting the crop's importance as India's leading kharif oilseed. While executives suggest that production in other states like Madhya Pradesh could mitigate supply disruptions.
