Kufuor calls for Africa’s resources and youthful population to be transformed into opportunities

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has urged African nations to capitalize on the continent's abundant resources, large youthful population, and strategic geographical location to enhance citizens' well-being. Addressing the Broadcasters Convention West Africa 2026, Mr. Kufuor highlighted Africa's vast advantages, including 30% of the world's mineral reserves, 65% of its arable land, and significant reserves of oil and gas.

He stressed that these natural resources, coupled with Africa's projected population of about a quarter of the world's by 2050, present a strong basis for development.

Mr. Kufuor emphasized the importance of investing deliberately in education, skills, and opportunities to ensure that the continent's young people can contribute meaningfully to its progress. He noted that the current generation of Africans has better access to education, information, and technology compared to previous generations. Therefore, it is crucial for young people to be educated, skilled, and provided with opportunities.

Additionally, Mr. Kufuor highlighted Africa's strategic geographical position as a significant advantage. Situated between major global markets and trade routes, the continent must leverage its resources, population, and location to secure greater economic benefits. He stressed that the responsible development of resources, the education and empowerment of people, and the continent's geographical advantage should be transformed into economic and strategic advantages.

Ultimately, the Former President of Ghana stated that the ultimate measure of Africa's progress should be the well-being of its citizens. This involves living in dignity, developing talents, and confidently participating in society.
