JAMB Cancels Ban on SIM Swap, Email Change for Candidates

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has lifted its longstanding rule against candidates swapping their registered GSM numbers and changing email addresses. This decision aims to assist those who have lost access to their credentials. Candidates can now update their details through a controlled verification process, protecting their profiles from fraud and unauthorized access. The new policy begins on September 21, 2026, according to JAMB's Acting Director, Public Affairs and Protocols, Dr. Fabian Benjamin.

Previously, JAMB prohibited SIM swapping and email changes due to security vulnerabilities. However, the emergence of advanced identity authentication and biometric verification systems enabled the Board to revise the policy without jeopardizing the integrity of candidates' records. This move is expected to ease difficulties faced by candidates who have lost access to their phone numbers or email accounts, preventing them from utilizing the credentials for future Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) processes.

JAMB emphasizes that the revised policy will operate under strict authentication procedures to prevent impersonation, fraud, and unauthorized changes to candidates' records. The SIM swap and/or email change service will be available to each candidate only once, exclusively at designated JAMB Computer-Based Test (CBT) centers, including State Offices where applicable. Candidates must provide the new GSM number and/or email address, along with a duly executed court affidavit, which must be scanned and ready for upload.

The seven-step process to access the service includes logging into the e-Facility profile, selecting "SIM Swap/eMail Change Payment," proceeding to a designated CBT center, and following the biometric verification and service selection steps. Once the update is completed, a confirmation message will be displayed. JAMB advises candidates to use the facility solely for genuine cases and warns against patronizing unauthorized outlets.

This policy adjustment aims to balance data security with candidate-friendly service delivery, ensuring legitimate candidates do not face unnecessary setbacks in their pursuit of tertiary education admission.
