Iran's Araghchi arrives in New York for UNGA

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in New York on Monday to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), according to state-run news agency IRNA. Araghchi is set to engage in consultations on regional developments during the UNGA's High-Level Week. Concurrently, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is also scheduled to travel to New York on Tuesday to participate in the UNGA, representing Iran amidst ongoing tensions with the United States.

Pezeshkian is expected to address the UN General Assembly on September 23, outlining Iran's stance on international affairs, particularly the US-Israeli war against Iran. He will also hold meetings and consultations with leaders and senior officials from various countries during his visit. The Iranian delegation accompanying Pezeshkian will include prominent figures from the Iranian media team, despite the US government denying visas to some members, marking an unprecedented hostile action by Washington.

The 81st session of the UNGA is under the theme "Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All." The high-level general debate is scheduled from September 22-26, with discussions on global challenges such as climate action, development, sea-level rise, and pandemic preparedness. The Iran delegation's arrival coincides with the US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warning that Iranian airlines may be effectively barred from international travel starting September 23 due to secondary sanctions imposed on Tehran.
