Iran war’s peacemakers also have skin in the game

Iran's ongoing conflict has not only intensified military attacks and economic strain but has also compelled countries like Oman, Pakistan, and Qatar to take on the role of peacemakers. While all three nations face personal stakes due to the conflict, their involvement in mediation efforts is driven by a combination of urgency and unique advantages.

Oman, with its long-standing ties to both Iran and the US, has quietly played a role in US-Iran diplomacy. Meanwhile, Qatar, a frequent target of Iranian drones and missiles, has facilitated backchannel negotiations and prisoner exchanges. Pakistan, though relatively new to mediation, has a history of acting as an intermediary between major powers.

All three countries are pushing for resumed talks during the United Nations General Assembly. However, the stakes are now personal, as each nation's physical infrastructure and revenue are directly impacted by the war. Qatar, which once exported a significant portion of the world's liquefied natural gas (LNG), now faces disruptions in exports due to the Strait of Hormuz being closed by Iran.

This has forced the country to rely on expensive fuel imports and consider extending rolling blackouts. Pakistan, on the other hand, has had to deal with the loss of LNG supplies, leading to higher fuel costs and potential power outages. Oman, despite not directly facing the conflict, is caught in a balancing act between its economic interests and its role as a mediator.

While all three nations recognize the need for an end to the conflict, their individual circumstances and stakes make their mediation efforts particularly noteworthy.
