Iran shows willingness to return to negotiating table

Iran signaled on Monday a willingness to resume talks with the United States, aiming to ease tensions between the two nations. The prospect of dialogue emerged during a meeting between Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who is currently in Tehran seeking to restart the stalled diplomatic process between Washington and Tehran.

Naqvi conveyed to the media that progress was made during the meeting, where they discussed the mediation process. Momeni, Iran's Interior Minister, expressed gratitude to Pakistan's political and military leadership for their contributions to regional peace and stability, specifically citing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir.

The visit comes amidst intensified diplomatic efforts to prevent another escalation between Iran and the US. Qatar has emerged as a key intermediary between the two sides, with its foreign ministry stating that its mediation team has been in contact with both parties for nearly two weeks to facilitate a resumption of negotiations. Iran has conveyed a set of conditions to Qatar for reopening talks, including an end to hostilities, the release of frozen Iranian assets, and the lifting of the US naval blockade.

Iran's conditions for dialogue consist of seven factors, although not all are publicly disclosed. The recent diplomatic activity follows the breakdown of the 14-point Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) brokered by Pakistan on June 17. Since then, sporadic strikes and a US naval blockade have continued, while Iran maintains control over traffic through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

The visit's significance is heightened ahead of Pezeshkian's upcoming trip to New York for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The Iranian president is expected to meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during the summit, providing another opportunity to discuss the stalled peace process. President Donald Trump has given mixed signals regarding the prospects of renewed negotiations, while Iranian officials have simultaneously expressed readiness for diplomacy and warned of a strong response to any further US military actions.

The possibility of renewed diplomacy is also bolstered by developments around the Strait of Hormuz, where Pakistan has facilitated the passage of another Qatari liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipment via Iran. The vessel crossed the strait over the weekend and is expected to arrive at Pakistan's LNG import facility by Tuesday, marking the second Qatari LNG cargo to reach Pakistan this month through an arrangement with Iran.
