Handelsbeziehungen: EU-Handelskammer sieht Umdenken im Handel mit China erreicht

The European Chamber of Commerce (EU Handelskammer) in China believes a shift in thinking is required regarding trade with China. Kammer President Jens Eskelund expressed concern in Beijing, stating that developments raise fundamental questions about trade. Eskelund emphasized that trade should benefit both sides, but if it only benefits one side, the purpose of trade is questioned.

He pointed out China's estimated daily trade surplus with Europe of one billion euros. The Chamber has long criticized the competitive conditions in the People's Republic of China, asserting that trade relations must be stable for Europe's benefit. Eskelund stated, "Europe also needs to see a gain from this."

While there is general agreement in Europe about the challenges China poses to European industry, Eskelund warned that China might not fully understand that Europe is changing, enabling measures to be taken. Currently, Brussels and Beijing are negotiating a trade dispute, with solutions expected in October. The EU has also debated new tariffs against China.

A new position paper by the EU Chamber of Commerce, presenting 1,096 recommendations to policymakers, noted that both sides share security concerns. The EU is working on a political framework to ensure autonomy, industrial resilience, and competitiveness, highlighting the need for a healthy balance between economic security and openness for businesses.

The paper also addressed the issue of "zombie companies," which are unprofitable firms that should be dismantled or restructured for the health of industries.
