Google Helps Local Governments Communicate Via AI

Google aims to facilitate civic discussions among local governments through artificial intelligence (AI), as announced in a blog post on September 22. The tech giant is backing the Jigsaw Partner Program, an initiative managed within Google. Google's involvement includes funding to enable more policymakers to leverage AI-powered civic conversations, while also encouraging local government leaders worldwide to participate.

The program allows local governments to utilize AI for large-scale, swift civic conversations at no operational cost to identify insights about community needs, thereby aiding in the decision-making process for essential services. Several cities, such as Bowling Green, Kentucky, Chattanooga, Tennessee, Riverside, California, and Kitchener, Ontario, have already implemented the tool called Sensemaking.

According to civic leaders, Sensemaking assists them in making more informed policy decisions. For instance, Bowling Green collected input from 8,000 residents for its 25-year growth plan.

Google emphasizes that civic leaders must not navigate governance without transparency, and constituents should not need to shout to be heard. The company invites governors, mayors, and local officials globally to express interest in using Sensemaking AI through the Jigsaw Partners Program. Together, they aspire to create a future where every voice is heard as the standard for effective leadership.

Meanwhile, PYMNTS reported on Monday about new guidance from the Urban Institute concerning the governance structures necessary before integrating AI systems that can autonomously act within public services. The institute's agentic AI playbook is intended to guide state and local officials in responsibly deploying such technology for cost-cutting, streamlined operations, and improved services.

Unlike conventional generative AI, agentic systems can plan and take actions autonomously. This autonomy is already being tested in government, as seen in a Virginia pilot that utilized agentic AI to identify redundant or burdensome language in regulatory documents. The initiative resulted in over $1.4 billion in annual savings and reduced permit and license processing times by nearly 80%.
