Ghana TVET Service, UNESCO, KPMG, Microsoft to train 100,000 facilitators in AI, digital skills

The Ghana Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Service has signed an agreement with UNESCO, KPMG, and Microsoft to train 100,000 TVET facilitators in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital skills as part of the AI EmpowerED initiative. This strategic partnership aims to integrate AI and digital innovation into Ghana’s TVET system, enhancing facilitators' capacity to deliver future-ready skills and improve teaching and learning outcomes.

The initiative acknowledges the rapid transformation of workplaces and learning environments, necessitating the equipping of facilitators with new digital competencies to address automation and intelligent systems demand. It also highlights the risks associated with AI use in education, such as plagiarism, misinformation, algorithmic bias, and improper handling of learner data.

Under the partnership, the Ghana TVET Service will lead national implementation, bolster institutional readiness, and integrate AI-enabled teaching and learning approaches into TVET delivery. UNESCO will provide policy leadership and technical oversight, ensuring alignment with international standards and best practices. KPMG will support program design and systems strengthening, with a focus on efficiency, scalability, and measurable impact.

Microsoft will offer digital infrastructure and AI-powered solutions to enhance teaching, learning, and institutional performance.

The Director-General of the Ghana TVET Service, Engr. Dr Eric Kofi Adzroe, emphasized the shift towards a TVET system aligned with industry and driven by technology. He highlighted that strengthening facilitators' capacity would build a workforce prepared for current demands and the global economy's future direction.

The Deputy Director-General in charge of Management Services, Abdul Fatah Maigah Mahama, stressed the importance of preparing facilitators to use AI responsibly, enabling them to assess AI-generated information, protect learner data, and mitigate biases associated with artificial intelligence. The partnership aims to create opportunities for youth employment, entrepreneurship, and innovation by ensuring TVET graduates acquire relevant and future-oriented skills.

Implementation will involve collaboration with government agencies, industry partners, and development organizations to ensure coordination, sustainability, and nationwide impact.
