Dodgers Sell Power-Hitting Outfielder to NPB Team in Surprise Move

The Los Angeles Dodgers recently designated power-hitting outfielder Ryan Ward for assignment. In a surprising turn of events, the 28-year-old has been sold to the Chunichi Dragons of Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan, as reported by The Athletic's Fabian Ardaya. This move will see Ward heading to Japan to further his career.

While it was conceivable that another MLB team might have claimed him off waivers due to his impressive minor league performance, he will now be joining the Chunichi Dragons. In his first 20 MLB games with the Dodgers this season, Ward hit three home runs, four doubles, had 12 RBI, and maintained a .218 batting average. Additionally, he contributed 18 home runs, 82 RBI, and a .249 batting average over 106 Triple-A Oklahoma City games.

For the 2025 season, Ward showcased his power with 36 home runs and 122 RBI in 143 Triple-A Oklahoma City games, and he hit 34 home runs in the minors during the 2024 season. It remains to be seen how well Ward will perform for the Chunichi Dragons, but if he continues his strong form, it could pave the way for his return to Major League Baseball in the future.
