DCI gives account of Dennis Osiemo’s death in Narumoru police custody

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has disclosed information regarding the arrest and death of Dennis Aremo Osiemo while held in police custody at Narumoru Police Station. Osiemo was apprehended in relation to an assault case that arose following an incident on July 2, 2026, at Narumoru Police Station. The DCI explained that Osiemo, who was a former farmhand of the complainant, entered her home, assaulted her, and stabbed her multiple times before escaping.

The victim reported the incident to the police and was taken to Tumutumu Hospital, where she stayed for nine days. The complainant later expressed dissatisfaction with the case handling to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) in Nanyuki, which led to the ODPP transferring the investigation to the DCI. The case file was then handed over to the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer (SCCIO) in Kieni East on September 3.

Subsequent to this, detectives located Osiemo in Kisii, where he had gone into hiding. With the SCCIO's assistance, DCI officers from Kieni East arrested Osiemo in Kisii on September 18. He was initially detained at Keroka Police Station before being taken by DCI officers to Narumoru Police Station on September 19. According to the DCI, Osiemo was examined and his statement recorded on the same day before being placed back in custody.

The DCI stated that he appeared healthy at the time, but noted that he was scheduled to face court on Monday, September 21, concerning the assault allegation. However, Osiemo was discovered hanging from ventilation grills inside the police cell on Sunday, September 20. Police authorities, including those from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), conducted an investigation at the scene, along with senior police personnel and a family member.

Osiemo's remains were then transferred to Narumoru mortuary for an autopsy. The DCI informed IPOA that it would oversee the investigation and pledged cooperation with the independent inquiry. The agency also expressed condolences to Osiemo's family and urged the public to await the investigation's results and refrain from making unverified claims on social media.
