Concerns in court as details emerge of Shadrack Sibiya’s possible escape attempt in rape, sexual grooming case

Concerns have emerged in court regarding a possible escape attempt and witness interference in the case of suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya, who faces charges of rape, sexual grooming, and human trafficking. Sibiya, 59, appeared before Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 22 September 2026, with his bail application postponed until 29 September.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) lieutenant-general, set to be detained at Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre in Pretoria, is accused of allegedly assaulting a 16-year-old girl and an 18-year-old woman at a Sandton hotel in May 2026. The South African National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) raised concerns about where Sibiya should be detained, citing allegations of potential escape from custody.

NPA spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago stated that Sibiya might escape if placed in a police station or Johannesburg Central Correctional Facility.

The state has also accused the investigating officers of attempting to protect witnesses and intimidate them, as a voice note allegedly related to the case was circulated on Tuesday afternoon. Kganyago confirmed that Sibiya faces five charges, including three counts of sexual grooming, one count of human trafficking, and one count of rape.

National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe revealed that the arrest followed an investigation with "overwhelming evidence" against Sibiya, emphasizing that rank or status does not protect an officer from criminal accountability. She further highlighted the sensitivity of the matter due to its involvement with a minor and urged potential victims to come forward without fear.

Bishop Lazarus Azwihangwi Maumela, an alleged ANC affiliate, claimed that Sibiya was arrested while dining at a restaurant in Sandton, alleging that the charges stem from internal struggles within the police service.
