California Declares Emergency as Potentially Historic El Nino Approaches

California Governor Gavin Newsom has issued a state of emergency as the West Coast braces for a potentially record-breaking El Nino season. The emergency proclamation, made on September 21, allows state agencies to mobilize resources swiftly and prepare for the anticipated winter impacts. Newsom emphasized the importance of equipping communities, first responders, and families with the necessary support and confidence to face the severe weather ahead.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, there is a greater than 90% chance that El Nino will intensify into a very strong event during the upcoming fall and winter. The agency also predicts a 75% likelihood of a historic El Niño, surpassing previous events since 1950. This phenomenon occurs every two to seven years when trade winds weaken, allowing warm water from the western Pacific to move eastward, altering weather patterns globally.

El Nino can trigger heavy rain, flooding, landslides, coastal flooding, and other hazards in California. The state's emergency declaration aims to equip agencies with flood-fighting supplies, such as sandbags and pumps, and prepare the California National Guard for potential flood response, search-and-rescue, engineering, and logistics operations. While El Nino does not guarantee specific weather events, it raises the risk of severe conditions for the region.

California has already experienced coastal damage due to recent storms, with erosion and property damage affecting Southern California. The emergency proclamation encourages communities to proactively prepare for possible flooding, landslides, power outages, and other impacts associated with a strong El Nino.
