Breyton Paulse backs Lions to do the business in the 2026/27 URC season

Renowned Springbok legend Breyton Paulse believes the Lions to be the standout team among South African franchises in the upcoming 2026/27 United Rugby Championship (URC) season. The sixth season of the competition commences this weekend, with the Lions facing a formidable challenge against defending champions Leinster at Ellis Park on Saturday. Paulse anticipates Leinster to field a weakened squad, providing an advantage to the Lions in what could be a promising encounter.

Last season, the Lions encountered setbacks, losing 31-7 in their final pool game and 59-10 in the quarterfinals during their visit to Dublin. Despite these defeats, the Johannesburg side achieved notable milestones, securing the South African Shield, making their URC playoffs debut, and qualifying for the Champions Cup for the first time. Head coach Ivan van Rooyen also garnered well-deserved recognition with URC Coach of the Season honors and other individual accolades.

Paulse expresses optimism regarding the Lions' potential for success in the forthcoming season, praising their cohesive team spirit and resourcefulness despite budget limitations and a lack of high-profile talent compared to other franchises. However, the Lions will be without scrumhalf Haashim Pead, who has departed to join the Stormers, reportedly for more playing time due to competition from established South African players Morne van den Berg and Nico Steyn.

Among the other South African teams, Paulse foresees the Stormers and Bulls strengthening their rosters with promising signings, such as Cheslin Kolbe, Siya Kolisi, Wilco Louw, Yaqeen Ahmed, and the emergence of potentially influential players like JP Pietersen. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining player fitness and avoiding injuries in crucial positions, particularly for players like Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Ruhan Nel, who has been a captain of inspiration.
