Another U.S. Soldier Is Dead as Iran War Casualties Rise

The death toll of U.S. soldiers involved in the Iran war is steadily increasing as the conflict drags on and the Trump administration grapples with the challenge of ending the engagement. On this particular month, a female soldier succumbed to an undisclosed medical incident while en route to Saudi Arabia, according to Pentagon data.

In addition, 66 more U.S. personnel sustained injuries in combat during the same month, raising the official tally of war casualties above 850. Since Iran escalated hostilities in early July, nearly half of the total casualties - 419 wounded or deceased - have transpired. However, the Pentagon's reported count of military casualties, as recorded over six months by The Intercept, is believed to be a significant underestimation.

This discrepancy is attributed to what one U.S. official described as a "casualty cover-up". The Pentagon's casualty database, known as the Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS), initially tallied casualties under the designation of "Operation Epic Fury". Since July 7, they have been separately cataloged under the generic heading "Overseas Operations".

Prior research by The Intercept has revealed that DCAS has omitted hundreds of wounded or deceased personnel from the Iran war. For instance, Maj. Sorffly Davius, a signals and communication officer from the New York Army National Guard, died while on duty in Kuwait on March 6 but his death is not included in the official count.

Similarly, three U.S. contractors based in the region have also lost their lives during the conflict. The discrepancies in the casualty counts have been a topic of concern for months, with the Pentagon failing to address the anomalies. The latest figures indicate that 352 personnel were wounded or killed in July, with no fatalities in August.

However, the Pentagon's admission of 352 personnel wounded or killed in July and zero fatalities in August marks a significant departure from their previous reporting. Including non-hostile deaths, DCAS records 19 deaths due to the Iran war, excluding Maj. Davius. The count also fails to include Sgt. Devin Seibel, who died in Irbil, Iraq, in a training accident on May 31, as reported by a military press release.
