Alan Kyerematen praises NDC’s economic gains but questions sustainability

Alan Kyerematen, leader of the United Party (UP), has praised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for stabilizing Ghana's economy, but questions whether the gains can be maintained in the long run. Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV, Kyerematen acknowledged the government's achievements in improving the country's macroeconomic conditions under President John Dramani Mahama.

However, he cautioned against considering the current economic gains as the ultimate measure of success, emphasizing the importance of sustained improvement as a more significant indicator of effective economic management. "If you ask me about my own assessment of what the NDC and President John Dramani Mahama have done, I would say, generally, they have done well, particularly stabilising the macroeconomy.

The question we need to ask is whether they can sustain the progress that has been made," Kyerematen explained. He stressed that while stabilizing the macroeconomy is crucial, the government must demonstrate its ability to maintain the improvements through sound and consistent policies. "I think that is a very important material question.

Success is good and is very important, but the real litmus test of success is when you are able to sustain it. So the question we need to ask can they sustain what they have done?" For Kyerematen, the sustainability of the current gains will be a crucial measure of the government's economic performance.
