Akpabio defends Tinubu’s absence, says president still running Nigeria

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has refuted claims of a presidential vacancy in Nigeria, asserting that President Bola Tinubu remains the country's leader despite his absence from the nation. Akpabio made these remarks in Akwa Ibom State, addressing concerns over Tinubu's prolonged stay in Europe and the concurrent absence of Vice President Kashim Shettima.

He firmly rejected suggestions that he was acting President, clarifying that Tinubu continued to govern from abroad. Akpabio stated, "First to correct an impression. I am the Senate President and Chairman of the National Assembly. By your grace, the grace of God, and the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, I am not the acting president.

Because the President is still in power. The President is on a working leave. So, there is no absence in Aso Rock." He explained that while the President cannot perform his duties domestically, he achieves similar outcomes overseas. For instance, Tinubu recently participated in a state visit with French President Emmanuel Macron and addressed bilateral matters to benefit Nigeria.

Akpabio also highlighted the role of technological advancements, enabling Tinubu to direct government affairs remotely. He argued that Nigeria has become a global village where remote instructions can effectively manage affairs. Akpabio emphasized that Tinubu remains in contact with domestic officials and will soon return to commission presidential projects.

He added that once back in Nigeria, Tinubu will announce a date for commissioning these projects. The Senate President declined to disclose specific project details, stating he does not want to "leak" what Tinubu will commission. Tinubu had initially departed for Europe on August 30 for a three-week working vacation, initially traveling to London before heading to Paris.

The President met Macron in Paris, discussing bilateral relations. The trip extended beyond the initial three weeks, with the Presidency announcing on Monday that Tinubu would return to Nigeria at the weekend. This absence has sparked political and constitutional debates, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar questioning who is exercising presidential authority during Tinubu's extended absence.

Atiku cited Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution, which mandates that the Vice President assume acting presidential duties when the President is on vacation or unable to perform his duties. The Federal Government maintains that Tinubu remains in charge and can govern from any location. Akpabio's statement adds the National Assembly's support to the Presidency's claim that there is no leadership vacuum and that Tinubu continues to serve as the country's President while on his extended working leave.
