2027: Tinubu demands police neutrality, professionalism

President Bola Tinubu has cautioned the Nigeria Police Force against political interference as the country approaches the 2027 general elections, urging the Force to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and impartiality. This warning was delivered during the 2026 Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers held in Owerri, Imo State.

Tinubu's remarks, as reported by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, emphasize the necessity for the police to serve the Nigerian people and protect the constitutional order, rather than becoming an instrument of political interests. The President reiterated the Federal Government's commitment to police reforms, stressing the need for sustained investment in personnel, training, technology, intelligence infrastructure, operational logistics, welfare, and institutional systems.

He assured the officers that the government would provide the necessary support for them to effectively manage security during the elections. Tinubu also highlighted the crucial role of the police in maintaining public confidence, preventing violence and intimidation, ensuring peaceful campaigns, and guaranteeing citizens' participation in the democratic process without fear.
