Zach Ertz is returning to the Eagles. See details of his signing

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed former tight end Zach Ertz to the practice squad, as reported by ESPN. Ertz's return aims to bridge the gap left by the injured Dallas Goedert, who will be sidelined with a sprained MCL for a few games. Goedert is the Eagles' sole receiving tight end on the roster, with Johnny Mundt and EJ Jenkins serving as blocking tight ends.

Rookie Eli Stowers, drafted in the second round last year, is currently on injured reserve due to a hamstring issue but was not deemed ready to contribute prior to his injury. Ertz, now 35 years old, last played for the Eagles from 2013 to the midpoint of the 2021 season before being traded to Arizona. He suffered an ACL tear last December while playing for the Commanders but is considered fully recovered.

Ertz accumulated 50 catches for 506 yards in 13 games last season before his injury, falling 11 receptions short of breaking Hall of Famer Harold Carmichael's franchise record of 589 receptions. Ertz holds the team record for receptions in a single season with 116, achieved in 2018, the year Goedert was drafted. Given his current status on the practice squad, Ertz is poised to surpass Carmichael's record in his upcoming games, including the Eagles' next match against the Chicago Bears on Monday night, September 28.
