Xi Jinping to visit US this week for talks with Trump, China confirms

Beijing has officially confirmed that Chinese President Xi Jinping will embark on a state visit to the United States this week, from Wednesday to Friday, for talks with President Donald Trump. The purpose of the visit is to strengthen "strategic stability" between the world's two largest economies, addressing issues such as trade disputes, artificial intelligence, and broader strategic concerns, including the US-led war in the Middle East.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun stated that the leaders will have an "in-depth exchange of views on major issues concerning China-US relations and world peace and development." Upon Xi's arrival at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday, Trump will personally welcome him.

The trade war between the two nations is a key concern, as both have yet to reach a lasting agreement. Despite a tariff truce lasting nearly a year, President Trump expressed his intention to discuss nearly all matters with Xi during their meeting. However, analysts warn that expectations for the summit are low, with only a possible short-term truce being a realistic outcome.

Trade secretary Scott Bessent and China's top negotiator for trade, Vice Premier He Lifeng, will also be part of the delegation, discussing creating a communication channel for AI concerns and managing differences. The US has proposed a notification mechanism for potential AI-related incidents, while China seeks to avoid sanctions against countries dealing with Iran. The looming threat of military confrontation over Taiwan, a self-ruled island claimed by China, further complicates the diplomatic efforts.
