We are largely import-dependent – NPA boss on Ghana’s fuel vulnerability

The CEO of Ghana's National Petroleum Authority, Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, has highlighted the country's significant reliance on imported refined petroleum products. This import dependence makes Ghana vulnerable to fluctuations in the international market. His comments come as global fuel prices have risen, putting pressure on the downstream petroleum sector.

In response, the NPA has increased its price floor for gasoline and diesel, while the state-owned fuel distributor, BOST, has cut exports to neighboring Burkina Faso and Mali to secure domestic supply. Tamakloe acknowledged the challenges of leading an industry so susceptible to external shocks, stating that he has always been prepared for potential turbulence.

He emphasized that the responsibility of leadership is to address both favorable and adverse conditions, and the NPA has been working to mitigate the impact of the current market turbulence since February. So far, the authority's management of the situation has been deemed satisfactory.
