Dr. Akwasi Oppong-Fosu, the National Chairman hopeful for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has dismissed claims that his decision to run for the party's leadership is driven by a desire for increased visibility. During an interview with JoyNews on Monday, September 21, Dr. Oppong-Fosu stated that he is seeking to offer "substance" rather than simply boosting his political profile.

He explained that some politicians enter leadership contests despite having little chance of winning solely to enhance their public recognition. However, Dr. Oppong-Fosu emphasized that his political career has been driven by differing motivations. He affirmed that he has never been motivated by a craving for the political spotlight or personal acclaim.

According to Dr. Oppong-Fosu, some candidates may deliberately enter political races to have their names and images seen by a broader audience, even if they acknowledge their low likelihood of winning. He clarified that he is not participating in the NDC's National Chairman contest for such reasons. "I'm not in for that. I'm not," he stated.

Dr. Oppong-Fosu, who has been involved in politics for over four decades, argued that his lengthy political record disproves any notion that he pursues office for recognition. He reiterated that remaining out of the spotlight was a deliberate aspect of his political career, not a sign of disengagement. Dr. Oppong-Fosu framed his candidacy around the importance of substance in political leadership.

He argued that the NDC should focus not just on the recognizability of individuals but on the ideas, experience, and contributions they can make to the party. He asserted that "visibility without substance is just noise," stressing that the NDC should prioritize the underlying qualities and ideas of candidates over their public appeal.
