Using borehole water to rinse mouth risky – Aproko Doctor

Nigerian doctor Aproko Doctor has cautioned against using untreated borehole water to rinse the mouth, as it may expose individuals to bacteria associated with stomach ulcers. In a video posted on X, he urged people to be mindful of the source and safety of water they use for oral hygiene, especially if it comes from a borehole.

Untreated water can contain bacteria like Helicobacter pylori, commonly known as H. pylori, which is linked to peptic ulcers. H. pylori can enter the stomach, damaging the protective lining and leading to acid damage that causes ulcers. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases identifies H. pylori infection and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as major causes of peptic ulcers.

Aproko Doctor emphasized the importance of treating water before use, whether by boiling, filtering, or adding chemical disinfectants. He also cautioned about the potential for contamination due to pipes carrying borehole water being in close proximity to soakaway pipes. Persistent symptoms like black or tarry stool may indicate gastrointestinal bleeding and require immediate medical attention.
