US arrests 18 suspects in killing of Haitian president

Eighteen individuals suspected of orchestrating the 2021 assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise have been extradited from Haiti to the United States to face trial, according to federal authorities. Moise, a 53-year-old former president, was killed on July 7, 2021, by a group of about 20 military-trained Colombian mercenaries.

The FBI and the Department of Justice have confirmed that the arrests signify their unwavering commitment to prosecuting all parties involved in the plot. Five years after the tragedy, 30 suspects have been indicted, with the extradition process having already begun for 18 of them. Among the extradited is a prominent figure, Joseph Felix Badio, a former anti-corruption official, who was involved in the investigation.

The remaining individuals are Colombian mercenaries, as reported by Haitian government and police sources. Colombia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that they have no involvement in the extradition process and that it falls under the jurisdiction of the respective countries' authorities. In May, four men were convicted of plotting Moise's assassination in a Miami federal court, facing potential life sentences for their roles in the conspiracy.

The ongoing political instability in Haiti, characterized by the absence of a president and the control of gangs over a majority of the capital, Port-au-Prince, has further exacerbated the nation's precarious situation. The upcoming elections, scheduled for December 13, require a secure environment for their successful completion.

A United Nations-backed force, intended to assist local police in combating the gangs, will not be fully staffed by October as initially planned.
