Suspects in 2021 killing of Haitian president flown to US to face trial

In the aftermath of former Haitian President Jovenel Moise's assassination in July 2021, 18 suspects have been airlifted from Haiti to the United States to face trial, according to US Attorney Jason Reding Quinones. The killing left Haiti without a political leader and empowered armed groups in the country. US prosecutors allege that the suspects plotted the assassination from South Florida, staging a foreign conspiracy that involved mercenaries and weapons.

Thirty individuals have been indicted in the US in connection with the crime. While American proceedings have made notable strides, including arrests and convictions, Haitian legal proceedings have encountered significant obstacles and have yet to culminate in a trial five years after the assassination. Critics, such as prominent human rights activist Pierre Esperance, have condemned the slow progress of the Haitian investigation and the transfer of suspects to the US, arguing that it undermines the country's justice system and calls for improvements to handle such complex cases domestically.
