‘Urgent and important’: Serikin border complex fast-tracked for 2027 completion, says minister

BAU, Sept 21 — Construction of the RM43.66 million Serikin ICQS Complex has progressed 11.23% as of yesterday and is projected to conclude by the end of next year. The border security initiative, overseen by the National Security Council (MKN), has been designated as an 'urgent and important' project for expedited implementation.

Datuk Mustapha Sakmud, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department for Sabah and Sarawak, stated that the project is an essential part of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) Implementation Action Meeting and the MA63 Technical Committee Council. Speaking to reporters following a site visit, Mustapha emphasized the significance of upgrading border projects to safeguard national sovereignty, particularly in Sabah and Sarawak.

The project encompasses the main building and inspection counters, four quarters, a surau, a canteen, a guardhouse, and mechanical and electrical services. Mustapha highlighted the challenges of logistics, road construction, and provision of electricity, water, and telecommunications services that must be addressed to prevent operational delays post-completion.

Additionally, Mustapha visited the border control post (PKS) project site in Telok Melano-Temajuk, which is nearing completion with the tender process for a contractor expected to be finalized before the issuance of the Letter of Acceptance (SST). The PKS is anticipated to be finished in two years. Mustapha urged all agencies, departments, ministries, contractors, and other involved parties to recognize that border security projects hold a unique importance.
