Unification minister calls for fresh start in dialogue with N. Korea during meeting with ex-US envoy

On Monday, Unification Minister Chung Dong-young called for a fresh approach towards dialogue with North Korea, urging for a new beginning to achieve peace on the Korean Peninsula. During a meeting in Seoul with former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State and Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun, Chung highlighted the alarming advancements in North Korea's nuclear capabilities over the past seven years, contrasting it with the deterioration of the historic Singapore agreement between the United States and North Korea, as well as the complete severing of inter-Korean relations due to hostility and confrontation.

Chung emphasized that it is now time to "turn the clock forward," asserting that recent political decisions by former U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un could be instrumental in advancing the process. Trump's expressed interest in re-engaging with Kim this year has sparked speculation that he may revive the personal diplomacy that facilitated three meetings with Kim during his tenure.

The prospect of renewed personal diplomacy between Trump and Kim has been fueled by the former U.S. president's expressed desire to engage with the North Korean leader in the current year, potentially paving the way for the re-establishment of the personal dialogue that brought about three significant meetings during Trump's first term as president.
