Ukraine's Culture Ministry announces major fundraising initiative to help publishers struggling after Russian attacks

On September 21, Ukraine's Culture Ministry launched a $500,000 fundraising campaign to support independent publishers grappling with devastating financial setbacks following Russian attacks that destroyed 13 million books during the summer. Culture Minister Tetiana Berezhna emphasized that small publishers, which foster new voices and cover complex topics, are especially vulnerable, often halting operations after losing a single print run.

Russian aggression has targeted Ukrainian publishing infrastructure, including warehouses and printing facilities. The ministry estimates the industry's financial losses to exceed Hr 1.75 billion ($32 million). The Culture Ministry is collaborating with the KSE Foundation, the Ukrainian Book Institute, and the Book Arsenal to launch the grant program, which is currently gathering additional partners and stakeholders.

The organizers stress the urgency of the situation, noting that small publishers are particularly endangered. Deputy Culture Minister Bohdana Laiuk expressed optimism about the initiative's potential expansion next year. The ministry plans to open grant applications in November, aiming to assist at least 20 independent publishers with printing expenses.

Additionally, the Culture Ministry is exploring other support measures, such as broadening the YeKnyhya program for book purchases and facilitating low-interest loans through cooperation with the Economy Ministry.
