Trump’s approval falls to record low of 32% as high costs bite

In January 2025, President Donald Trump's approval rating plummeted to an all-time low of 32%, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll. This marked a significant decline from his 47% approval rating during his inauguration, despite his promises to reduce inflation and cease foreign conflicts. The poll, conducted over four days, revealed that discontent among Republicans over the cost of living has reached unprecedented levels, with 51% disapproving of Trump's handling of the issue compared to 44% who approve.

This marks a stark contrast to Democrat Joe Biden's 35% low point in October 2024, before he decided not to run for reelection due to age-related concerns. Iran's involvement in the conflict has exacerbated the situation, as the strikes have pushed gasoline and diesel prices to record highs, further fueling inflation. Trump's promise to withdraw the troops from Iran by the election day has not materialized, and Iran's allies have threatened additional disruptions to oil markets.

A significant 82% of respondents expect the conflict to continue beyond the election. The poll also indicated that Democrats are ahead of Republicans in the 2025 midterms, with a 8-point lead, a significant increase from previous years. While Trump remains popular among Republicans on immigration issues, his overall approval rating among all Americans stands at just 36%, with 55% disapproving.
