Texas Governor Abbott halts all state-issued permits for data centers until grid audit is complete

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has halted the issuance of new permits for data centers in the state until a comprehensive energy audit of these facilities is completed, according to a report on September 21. This directive from the Republican governor effectively freezes all state-issued permits for data centers.

The move comes as a response to growing public concerns over the environmental impact of data centers, which have seen a surge in popularity due to the rise of artificial intelligence since roughly three years ago. These facilities have become one of the fastest-growing hubs for data in the world.

Abbott's decision to freeze connections between data centers and the state grid was prompted by the demand for an audit of these facilities, which includes examining power use, tax incentives, end users, and water consumption. This audit, directed by grid regulators, aims to ensure that data centers pay their own way, protect the grid and water resources, and complete the required audits.

Abbott stated, "Simply put, Texans must come first. Data centers must pay their own way, protect our grid and water, and complete the (audits)." The Texas grid regulators have estimated that their audit of data centers could last until late next year.
