Taraba nursing students protest over hostel attack, rape claim

The students of the Taraba State College of Nursing Sciences in Jalingo staged a protest on Monday following a reported incident involving one of their female students. The student was reportedly raped after being attacked by unknown individuals who broke into one of the female hostels located outside the institution’s premises.

After the assault, one of the student's fingers was allegedly cut off. She was subsequently taken to a private hospital in Jalingo for medical care. The attack occurred early Monday morning. According to an unnamed student union official, this is the second such incident on the students’ hostels within a two-week period. The official also mentioned that the school authorities were aware of the security issues, as they had previously addressed the matter and the Commissioner of Tertiary Education had visited the college and promised improvements in security measures, which have not been implemented.

The Provost of the college, Dr Dorcas Dugule, acknowledged the incident and stated that she was addressing the issue. The police spokesperson confirmed the attack and burglary, but could not confirm the rape allegation as they had not seen the victim.
