Sammy Gyamfi backs Mahama’s directive to restore NACOC’s at ports

Sammy Gyamfi, CEO of GoldBod, has expressed his approval of President John Dramani Mahama's decision to reintegrate the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) into Ghana's list of Port Inspection Agencies following a recent drug trafficking incident linked to a port. The CEO emphasized that this move is of concern to patriotic Ghanaians and raises questions about the effectiveness of monitoring and inspection systems at Ghana's ports.

Mr Gyamfi noted that the incident may have been a result of weak monitoring and inspection systems at the country's ports. He pointed out that NACOC, which is responsible for monitoring, regulating, enforcing, and controlling narcotics trafficking, was removed from the list of Port Inspection Agencies in June 2018 by the government.

Gyamfi acknowledged that the government's decision in 2018 weakened NACOC's port inspection function. He welcomed the President's reported directive to restore NACOC to the inspection regime, stating that it is refreshing to learn about this development. According to the CEO, NACOC should now be granted unfettered access to all entry and exit points at Ghana's ports, including air, land, and sea.

Additionally, Gyamfi stated that he understands the President has directed that all scanners and personnel at Ghana's ports be replaced immediately. He believes that these measures, if implemented effectively, will strengthen checks and control at the ports, preventing the recurrence of such unfortunate incidents.
