Swiss captain Xhaka sidelined over fake COVID certificate

Swiss football captain Granit Xhaka will miss upcoming international matches after admitting to using a fraudulent COVID-19 vaccination certificate. The Swiss Football Association (SFV) confirmed this decision on Monday, stating that Xhaka reached this conclusion jointly with the SFV leadership. Xhaka publicly acknowledged his mistake in a social media post, explaining that he acquired the fake certificate instead of seeking clarification through the proper channels.

He expressed remorse for his actions and emphasized that he is cooperating fully with the relevant authorities.

The 33-year-old midfielder, who plays for Premier League club Sunderland, made his international debut for Switzerland in 2011 and holds the record for most caps for the national team with 152 appearances. SFV President Peter Knaebel praised Xhaka's willingness to take responsibility, welcoming the player's public statement and acceptance of blame.

However, Knaebel also decided that it is in the best interest of the team to complete the upcoming international camp without Xhaka. He added that the focus should now be on maintaining calm ahead of the team's UEFA Nations League fixtures, which include matches against North Macedonia, Scotland, Slovenia, and another match against North Macedonia at home.

Switzerland's team arrived in Belek, Turkey, on Monday to prepare for their away matches against North Macedonia and Scotland, followed by home games against Slovenia and North Macedonia. The SFV stated that they will reassess Xhaka's situation after the conclusion of the international window.
