Sisters of jailed ex-Pakistan PM Imran Khan arrested

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's sisters - Aleema Khan, Dr Uzma Khan, and Noreen Khan - have been arrested by Pakistani law enforcement agencies in Lahore, the capital of Punjab province. This follows a raid on Aleema Khan's home, where her other two sisters, nephews, and their children were also taken into custody, according to Zulfi Bukhari, a spokesman for Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.

All three sisters have been sent to Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore. The deputy commissioner of Lahore issued two separate orders for their 30-day detention under the Maintenance of Public Order law. However, the children of the arrested sisters were released.

The deputy commissioner's orders came after two separate court rulings, as seen by AFP. Khan's party has called for a protest on September 27, but information minister Attaullah Tarar has called the protest call illegal and stated that they will not allow it to disrupt people's lives.

Imran Khan has been in jail since 2023 and was sentenced to 17 years in prison for corruption charges he and his wife deny. The 73-year-old, a former cricket captain, served as Pakistan's Prime Minister from 2018 to 2022 before being removed in a no-confidence vote amid a political crisis.
