Man shot by ICE officer is detained in Texas with a bullet still in his back, attorney’s office says

A Venezuelan man, Wilber Rafael Garces Perez, 28, was shot by an ICE officer while making a DoorDash delivery in Austin, Texas on Sunday. Perez was taken to a hospital with a bullet still lodged in his back, according to his immigration attorney Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch. The man was detained at an ICE detention center in Pearsall, Texas, and is being interrogated while still in pain and without pain medication, the attorney said.

Perez, an asylum seeker who entered the U.S. through a parole program, has no criminal history. The Department of Homeland Security has not provided details on what prompted the shooting. Austin Mayor Kirk Watson wants local police to investigate the incident, arguing it wouldn't be appropriate for ICE to do so independently.
