RMAF scouts C-130J, C-390 to replace ageing Hercules fleet [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) is considering the Lockheed Martin C-130J and Embraer C-390 as potential replacements for their ageing C-130 Hercules fleet. However, the replacement aircraft must retain the Hercules' primary role as a tactical transport workhorse, with similar carrying capacity. RMAF chief General Tan Sri Muhamad Norazlan Aris emphasized that the successor should have a size that matches Malaysia's operational needs.

The C-130J, despite being newer, offers improved performance, avionics, and efficiency compared to the older Hercules. The larger and faster Embraer C-390 can carry up to 26 tonnes of cargo, including armoured vehicles and equipment, and fly at speeds similar to commercial airliners. However, RMAF's operational requirements are primarily focused on regional missions, and Norazlan stated that larger aircraft might not suit Malaysia's needs.

The decision to replace the Hercules will involve more than just buying new aircraft; it must consider operational capabilities, sustainment models, and performance-based logistics.
