Pakistan Wins Historic MMA Medal at Asian Games

Pakistan secured a historic bronze medal in the men's Modern Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) -60kg category at the Asian Games after Asim Khan's semifinal loss to Mirzobek Umarov. As the only MMA representative for Pakistan at the Aichi-Nagoya Games, Khan exited the competition with a 3-0 loss in the semifinals. Despite this setback, Khan became the first Pakistani MMA athlete to win a medal at the Asian Games.

This marked the debut of MMA at the Asian Games. Khan had already clinched his spot in the semifinals by defeating Cambodia's Sopanha Pheng with a 3-0 score in the quarterfinals. With only ten fighters in the Modern -60kg category, Khan's quarterfinal victory ensured Pakistan at least a bronze medal. Umarov outperformed Khan in the semifinal, securing a unanimous 3-0 decision to advance to the final.

Khan's coach, Dilawar Khan, acknowledged the challenge posed by competing against professional-level fighters for the first time at the Asian Games. He noted that these athletes had different levels of training and diet, but still expressed satisfaction with the result, as it marked Pakistan's debut in the sport and Asim becoming the country's first MMA fighter at the Asian Games. Pakistan is participating in 23 sports disciplines at the Games.
