The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for six Kerala districts - Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam and Thrissur. The alert is in effect from 7 am on Monday and predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and surface winds of up to 40 kmph in isolated areas. Chief Minister VD Satheesan has ordered a hourly assessment of the rain situation and SMS alerts have been sent out to Idukki and Kottayam districts.

Collectors in these districts have been directed to evaluate conditions and initiate evacuation procedures if necessary. On Sunday, four individuals tragically lost their lives in landslip incidents that occurred in Idukki and Kottayam. Additionally, heavy rainfall on the Kottapuzha River in Nilambur, Malappuram led to a flash flood that swept away six people.
