JPN says service providers updating systems to recognise new MyKad

The national registration department (JPN) announced that banks and other service providers across Malaysia are updating their systems to recognize the new MyKad, the national identification card. The updated cards, issued since September 17, come equipped with enhanced security features. JPN reported that some users have encountered difficulties verifying their identity online due to issues with electronic identity checks, also known as electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC).

These checks are routinely used by banks, e-wallets, and other online services to authenticate customer identities.

JPN has been collaborating with relevant agencies and companies to address the problem. The department has provided necessary information to service providers and is closely monitoring the situation to expedite the process. While the new MyKad has been rolled out nationwide, affected users are advised to consult their banks or service providers for alternative verification methods in the meantime.

The new MyKad features both design and security enhancements over its predecessor. However, complications have arisen shortly after the nationwide rollout, with several banks and digital services reporting the inability to recognize the new card during online identity checks. First-time users of MyDigital ID, who possess the new MyKad, have also experienced registration issues online. MyDigital ID has assured that its system will support online registration utilizing the new card starting October 1.
