General : eKYC Providers Updating Systems For New Generation MyKad - NRD

The national registration department of Malaysia began issuing the updated MyKad nationwide on September 17, equipped with enhanced security features. However, the transition has encountered some hurdles, as banks and other service providers are currently updating their systems to recognize the new-generation MyKad. The national registration department (JPN) revealed that they are aware of the issues faced by users and are collaborating with relevant agencies and companies to address the matter.

The problem pertains to electronic identity checks, known as electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC), which are widely employed by banks, e-wallets, and various online services to verify customer identities. JPN stated that eKYC service providers are actively updating their systems to accommodate the design and features of the new-generation MyKad during the verification process. They have provided the necessary information to service providers and are closely monitoring developments to expedite the process.

In the interim, affected users have been advised to seek alternative verification methods from their banks or service providers. The new MyKad, which underwent changes in appearance and security features, was rolled out nationwide on September 17. Initially, some banks and digital services reported difficulties in recognizing the new card during online identity checks.

Furthermore, first-time MyDigital ID users with the new MyKad have experienced difficulties registering online through the platform. MyDigital ID has assured that its system will support online registration using the new card starting from October 1.
