‘I’ll not support Uzodimma’s ambition to become Nigeria’s next Senate President’ – Wike

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has announced his refusal to endorse Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma's aspiration to assume the position of Nigeria's next Senate President. During a recent appearance on TVC’s Journalists’ Hangout programme, Wike stated, "This man's office will expire in January 2028. Now, he wants to leave his office to run for Senate.

I will never support a character of Hope Uzodimma to be Senate President of Nigeria." Furthermore, Wike alleged that Uzodimma was attempting to sway the selection of lawmakers to back his bid for Senate leadership. This declaration comes amidst a contentious relationship between Wike and the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), an organization headed by Uzodimma.

Earlier this week, the PGF declared their unwillingness to back any alliance or political coalition that could potentially impact President Bola Tinubu's re-election campaign or the prospects of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the 2027 elections. Viewed as a reference to the Rainbow Coalition, a bipartisan group allied with Wike and fostering Tinubu's re-election, this stance marks a significant escalation in the ongoing discord between the two political figures.
