Horror movie 'Resident Evil' tops North American box office

Resident Evil, a horror movie based on a popular video game series, dominated the North American box office with a whopping $60 million opening weekend, according to industry estimates released on Sunday. Directed by Zach Cregger and starring rising star Austin Abrams, the film follows a medical courier navigating mutant creatures to deliver a package to a remote hospital.

Last week's top performer, Warner Bros' long-awaited sequel "Practical Magic 2" starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, fell to second place, earning $12.2 million after its weekend run. The cursed story of modern-day witches, who face a grim fate if they fall in love with any man, had previously held the top spot for weeks.

Spidey, the web-slinging superhero from the "Spider-Man" franchise, maintained its strong presence in the box office charts, taking in another $6.5 million this weekend. This brings its cumulative earnings in the United States and Canada to an impressive $944.5 million.

Another highly anticipated film of 2026, "The Odyssey," rounded out the top three, pulling in $4.9 million. In a surprising fifth-place finish, "Coyote vs Acme," starring Will Forte and his animated counterpart Wile E. Coyote, managed to earn $4.5 million from Falling Forward Films. The final spots in the top 10 were claimed by "The Runner," "Daniel and the Fiery Furnace," "Transformers: The Movie," "The Weight," and "Buddy," which brought in $3.2 million, $3.1 million, $3.1 million, $2.3 million, and $1.9 million respectively.
