Haiti extradites 18 suspects in assassination of president to US

The Haitian government has extradited 18 suspects to the United States to face trial for their alleged role in the assassination of President Jovenel Moise five years ago. Moise was killed at his residence in the capital, Port-au-Prince, in July 2021, reportedly by a group of mainly Colombian mercenaries. Previous investigations into the assassination faced challenges due to gang control and lawlessness in Haiti.

US Attorney Jason Reding Quiñones stated that this extradition marks a significant step towards holding those responsible accountable. The indictment includes 30 suspects, with 17 Colombian ex-soldiers and a former senior Haitian government official among them. US prosecutors allege that the planning and financing for Moise's killing originated in Florida, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti itself.

The extradition highlights the FBI's ongoing commitment to bringing all participants to justice. Several men have already been convicted in a Miami court for their involvement in the conspiracy, facing potential life sentences. The Colombian mercenaries claim they were unaware of the plan to murder Moise, having been recruited for a coup.

Haiti continues to grapple with gang violence and insecurity, with at least 1,408 people killed and 656 injured from April through June 2023. The country is set to hold its first presidential and legislative elections since 2016 on December 13, pending the security situation.
