Government dissolves 37-year-old Digital Communications Commission

The government has announced the dissolution of the Digital Communications Commission, an inter-departmental decision-making body established in 1989 to make policy decisions related to digital communications. Initially known as the Telecom Commission, it was renamed the Digital Communications Commission in 2018. The body, comprising senior officials from various ministries and departments, played a crucial role in resolving contentious issues and making decisions on matters like spectrum prices and recommendations by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.

Its last meeting was held on September 3, where it approved the majority of suggestions from the telecom regulator TRAI. However, the commission's recommendations on satellite communications spectrum still need to be approved by the Cabinet.
