FULL LIST: Names of 37 miners who died in NSCDC custody emerge

The International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) has recently released the names of 37 miners who tragically lost their lives while held in custody by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State. These unfortunate individuals were among a larger group of suspects who were apprehended during operations conducted on September 15 and 16 in Minna, the capital city of Niger State.

Upon the arrests, Suberu Aniviye, the Commandant of the NSCDC in the state at that time, reported that several detainees had succumbed to what was later identified as a suspected disease outbreak. The precise cause of death is yet to be determined through medical examinations. The incident led to the suspension of officers involved and the formation of an independent committee to investigate the events leading up to and including the deaths.

The IHRC, through its spokesperson Awaisu Giwa, an International Peace Ambassador, obtained the list of the deceased from records kept at the General Hospital in Minna. Initially, the list contained 37 names, but four additional names were later added after relatives of victims contacted the commission with information not present in the hospital records.

Giwa explained that the list was provided to the commission by the General Hospital's mortuary attendant, following directions from the Chief Medical Director (CMD). They intend to obtain the official list from the hospital, complete with their letterhead, in the near future.

Giwa emphasized that the list would be instrumental in assisting the commission in providing compensation to the families of the deceased miners. The names of the 37 miners who perished are as follows: Ibrahim Sani, Fahad Sa'adu, Abdulsalam Ismail, Usman Aliyu, Abubakar Alhaji, Sani Nasir, Sanusi Khalid, Ahmad Aliyu, Safiyanu Abdullahi, Suleiman Dantala, Idris Haruna, Sani Yakubu, Safiyanu Abubakar, Abdullahi Abubakar, Abubakar Musa, Abdul Mudassir, Suleiman Lawal, Usman Abdullahi, Samuel Sambo, Ibrahim Musa, Yusuf Nasiru, Umar Lawal, Isyaku Amisu, Bissallah Adamu, Abdulbari Suleiman, Shafisu Lado, Usman Ahmad, Usman Ibrahim, Sani Isyaku, Musa Ibrahim, Idris Bashir, Kabiru Suleiman, Emmanuel Emeka, Mu’awiya AbdulKarim, Abdul Gafar Abubakar, Usman Haruna, and Yaro Salihu Soba.
