Formula 1 agrees to shorter races in 2027

Formula 1 has agreed to shorter races in 2027, reducing the official race distances from 305 kilometres to 290 kilometres. The Formula 1 Commission abolished the strict three-hour overall event cap, granting organizers more flexibility to complete full race distances. This change, announced in London, comes alongside refinements to the power unit regulations introduced in 2027.

The power unit regulations prioritize increased engine power over hybrid electrical output, which led to the decision to reduce the total race distance by two or three laps. Despite the shorter distances, the commission retained a two-hour maximum for active racing time to ensure teams can maximize their performance on track. The adjustment also aims to provide spectators with the best opportunity to enjoy a complete race, even in the event of disruptions such as rain delays or red flags.

Practice sessions will have added flexibility to extend following stoppages, further accommodating potential delays.
