Flights are disrupted across US Northeast because of technical problems at a key air traffic center

Hundreds of flights were disrupted across the U.S. Northeast on Monday due to technical problems at a vital regional air traffic control center in Philadelphia, disrupting operations at major airports like JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark just as foreign dignitaries arrived for the United Nations General Assembly. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that a primary circuit failure at the Philadelphia facility caused the widespread cancellations, along with a severed backup fiber optic line, which may take up to 13 hours to repair.

Despite the technical issues, President Donald Trump's flight from Washington D.C. to New York proceeded as planned. FAA Administrator Brian Bedford stated that the agency is working to restore the primary connection and repair the backup line, but the timeline for completion remains uncertain. Some airlines temporarily waived change fees for affected passengers, and FAA testing of a new AI system designed to predict schedule conflicts and weather issues was ongoing in the Washington, D.C. area and did not contribute to the recent disruptions.
